BET Awards 2024: Celebrating Black Excellence with Big Wins and Emotional Moments

The 24th annual BET Awards, held on June 30th, 2024, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California, was a night to remember. Hosted by the ever-dynamic Taraji P. Henson, the ceremony served as a vibrant celebration of Black excellence in entertainment, honoring achievements in music, sports, television, and film.

One of the biggest stories of the night was the rise of Victoria Monet. The singer, songwriter, and producer, known for her collaborations with Ariana Grande, finally took home her first BET Award for Video of the Year with her captivating visuals for “Dive.” This win marked a significant milestone for Monet, solidifying her place as a rising star with a distinct artistic vision. Her emotional acceptance speech resonated with many as she spoke about overcoming self-doubt and the journey towards creative validation.

Usher, a musical legend, was another major highlight. He not only bagged the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award but also won the Best Male R&B/Pop Artist category. Usher’s career spans two decades, with countless hits and an undeniable influence on modern R&B. The Lifetime Achievement Award presentation was a star-studded affair, featuring heartfelt tributes from industry giants like Babyface, L.A. Reid, and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Kendrick Lamar, new of his acclaimed collection discharge, overwhelmed the rap categories, winning Collection of the Year for “Mr. Assurance & the Huge Steppers” and Best Male Hip Jump Craftsman. Megan Thee Stallion’s electrifying performance of “BOA” and “Where Them Girls at” set the stage on fire, showcasing the fierce femininity that has redefined contemporary hip-hop.

On the television front, shows like “Abbott Elementary” and “Insecure” continued their winning streak, taking home awards for Outstanding Comedy Series and Best Actress in a Comedy, respectively. Issa Rae’s acceptance speech for “Insecure” was a powerful one, thanking the show’s impact on Black women’s representation and the importance of authentic storytelling.

Sports legends were also honored, with LeBron James receiving the Sportsman of the Year Award. James, a towering figure in basketball, continues to inspire generations with his dedication and activism. His acceptance speech focused on empowering the youth and advocating for social justice.

The BET Awards weren’t just about accolades. The night also featured powerful performances that resonated deeply with the audience. Will Smith’s return to the stage with a gospel-inspired performance of “You Can Make It” was a significant moment.  It signaled his potential comeback and a willingness to confront past mistakes.
