A man is dead, and two suspects are in custody following a deadly shooting in Duluth’s Central Hillside neighborhood early Sunday morning, the city’s first homicide of 2025, according to police.
The shooting took place around 1:30 a.m. on the 100 block of East Third Street, an area known for its history of gun violence. The victim, whose identity hasn’t been disclosed yet, was targeted with multiple gunshot wounds. Another man was also targeted during the incident but thankfully escaped without injuries, according to the police.
Authorities quickly identified two suspects in the case. Following a regional alert, the Cloquet Police Department and the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the apprehension of the individuals.
The primary suspect, Antonio Duryea Hendon, 35, has been booked on preliminary charges of second-degree murder and first-degree assault. Amber Michele Rose Walker, 41, is being held on an initial charge of aiding and abetting murder.
The police made it clear that everyone involved was familiar with one another, and they were investigating a previous incident that might have sparked the violence. In a statement, the department mentioned that “this tragic incident” likely arose from an ongoing dispute between the parties.
The block where the shooting occurred has seen several high-profile violent events in recent years, contributing to concerns among residents. In May 2021, 19-year-old Juamada Keller Anderson Jr. was fatally shot during a group confrontation in the same area. In 2023, a bystander was wounded by stray gunfire, and that suspect was later killed in a separate Minneapolis shooting. Last August, two men were injured in a large street fight, one of whom later pleaded guilty to threats of violence.
As of Sunday, the Duluth Police Department had not released the name of the deceased, pending notification of next of kin. Authorities have not disclosed whether any additional arrests are expected, but they have indicated that the investigation remains active.
With Sunday’s incident marking the first homicide in Duluth this year, police say they will continue working with community partners to address the persistent cycle of violence in the Central Hillside neighborhood.
